To gain your instrument rating, you must meet specific requirements and undergo training at a flight school to demonstrate proficiency in flying solely by reference to instruments. It is often the next step in becoming a pilot.
1. Pre-requisites:
- Must hold a private pilot's license.
- Meet the aeronautical experience requirements set by the aviation authority.
2. Training:
- Receive ground instruction on instrument flight rules (IFR), navigation systems, instruction approaches, weather theory, and regulations.
- Complete flight training in actual or simulated instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) to learn to fly solely by references to instruments.
3. Flight hours:
- Approximately 15 hours of instrument flight training from an authorized instructor.
- At least 3 hours of instrument training within the preceding 2 calendar months before the practical exam.
-Approximately 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time.
4.Cross country flight :
- Complete a cross country flight under IFR rules that include:
* Distance of at least 250 nautical miles along airways or ATC directed routing.
* Instrument approach at each airport where a landing is made.
* Three different kinds of approaches with the use of navigation systems.
5. Written Exam:
- Pass a written knowledge exam specific to instrument flying.
6.Checkride:
- Pass a practical flight test (checkride) with an FAA designated examiner or authorized check pilot. During the checkride, you will demonstrate your ability to operate an aircraft solely by reference to instruments.
